The Role of Energy in Personal Growth, Part Two

In my last article we discussed the science behind the concept of “Grow or Decline.” In this article I would like to talk about the subtle but distinct difference between our emotions and our feelings. We have talked about how our thoughts generate an energy of vibration. Let’s take a closer look at how this energy of vibration, generated by our thoughts, creates an emotion that sponsors a related feeling.

When a thought is created in our brain, it generates a spontaneous electro-chemical charge that travels to the pituitary gland in the brain. The pituitary gland then sends a signal to the adrenal glands to secrete the specific chemicals designed to match the emotion that best fits the thought, but here is the interesting part. Most recent research shows that we seem to have only two major emotions! Yes, according to current science all thoughts generate only one of two root-cause emotions. The two root-cause emotions are “Love” or “Fear.” So, when we create a thought, it will generate one of the two root-cause emotions.

Now, once a thought generates a specific root-cause emotion, that emotion then stimulates a subsidiary feeling. For instance, the feeling of sadness, stress, anger, hate, judgment, unforgiveness, etc. are examples of feelings sponsored by the root-cause emotion of “Fear.” The feelings of gratitude, joy, peace, forgiveness, abundance, tolerance, etc. are examples of feelings sponsored by the root-cause emotion of “Love.” So, the sequence goes something like this:

THOUGHT = EMOTION = FEELINGS

I would certainly understand if some of you were thinking, “So what!” Here’s the “what” and the “why” behind all of this. Rather than living in unpleasant feelings, change the feeling! How? By changing the emotion. How? By changing the thought!

The next time you feel anxiety, stress, or any unpleasant feeling, ask yourself, “What is the root-cause emotion of this feeling?” If your answer is “Fear,” simply change your sponsoring emotion to “Love” by changing your thoughts. Of course, to do any of this you must first be consciously aware. Many people I meet today seem to be going through life unconsciously. Their thoughts seem to be generally automatic, instinctive and reactive. If this happens to describe you or someone you know, I would like to ask your indulgence in some hard-earned advice.

The easiest lessons seem to be the hardest to learn. The reason this is true is that we may have been unconsciously engaged in reactive thought for a long time. Reactive thought is perpetuated from our memories of the past. Those memories are stored in our subconscious. Any fear-related memory that is stored in the subconscious will automatically stimulate a fearful thought when something happens that recalls that memory. This is the pattern of reactive thought; it is completely driven from past memories stored in the subconscious.

However, there is good news. These new researched-based findings now give us a new direction. We can intentionally change our thoughts to those thoughts that will generate the emotion of “Love.” The emotion of “Love” can then begin to generate feelings that are sponsored by that emotion — feelings of peace, joy, abundance, trust, etc.

To do this we must become consciously aware. This is the hard part. You remember I said earlier that the easy lessons are the hardest to learn. The reason is that to change our thoughts, we must re-program our subconscious.
